NUBIFIE Wants Law On Casual Workers’ Unionism
The National Union of
Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) yesterday urged the Federal Government to enact a law that would allow casual workers to unionise.
The General Secretary of NUBIFIE, Mr Muhammed Sheikh, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
Sheikh said that although the union was opposed to casualisation of workers, it was a trend that was fast gaining grounds.
He said that the casual workers were deliberately employed to be paid meagre salaries.
“We are unhappy with the type of employment that is going on now in the finance industry, especially in the banks and insurance sector,’’ he said
Sheikh explained that some employers in the financial industry now outsourced some segments of their workforce from service providers.
“They ask service providers for some categories of workers whom are usually not included in their pay roll.
“Although labour is not comfortable with the practice, we have realised that it is a global phenomenon that has crept into Nigeria.
“We believe that once the workers are assigned to daily schedule, they should be able to exercise their right of freedom to belong to NUBIFE,” he said
Sheikh said that the union would soon dialogue with the service providers and banks to ensure that the workers were allowed to join the union.
“Sometimes, we have tripartite meetings and we are making headways as we are trying to build an understanding around the issues.
“Ultimately, it will take government’s intervention to direct employers to allow casual workers to join the union,’’ he said
Sheikh urged the government to reconstitute the Nigeria Employers Association of Banks, Insurance and Allied Institutions (NEABIAI) that would set a benchmark for salaries in the financial sector.
“NEABIAI has been moribund since 2005, but can be quite instrumental to the stability and industrial peace in the sector,” he said.
