Fashola Sets N500m Revenue Target For LASTMA

L-R: Vice President Namadi Sambo, Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Supervising Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr Musa Sada and President Goodluck Jonathan, launching the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company at the State Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa in Abuja last Thursday.
The governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, has set a revenue target of N500 million for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) for this year.
This was contained in his 2014 budget he presented to the state House of Assembly for approval recently.
Governor Fashola in his budget also cancelled the hazard allowance for officers of the agency for risking their lives while on duty controlling free flow of traffic in Lagos State.
The Tide gathered that LASTMA is expected to source for the fund through fines and sanctions on road users that violates the provisions of Lagos State Road Traffic Laws.
Bat some Lagossians are not comfortable with the budget presentation in respect to LASTMA, as according to them, Fashola in a recent state broadcast charged the people to resist any arrest by LASTMA officials, stressing that their line of duty is to direct and control traffic in the state.
According to him, the agency is not a revenue generating organisation, but warned that Lagossians should respect traffic laws in the state.
Our correspondent reported that Lagossians are worried that the revenue target would adversely affect the lives of the people especially motorists in the state, adding that the agency had for the past six years of existence been branded as a corrupt outfit.
It was learnt that the state broadcast by the governor was as a result of a pocket of fine raised by an officer of LASTMA who escorted a commercial bus driver to the banks to withdraw money from the ATM as payment for traffic offence, which goes into private pockets of LASTMA officers in the name of fine for traffic offences.
Our correspondent further gathered that the agency which had been one of the highest revenue generating agency for Lagos State has been saddled with other responsibilities such as to ensure free flow of traffic in the state inspite of the fact that it had undergone various reforms under different administrators who proffer solutions on how best the agency could be repositioned to work effectively.
Efforts to speak with the chairman of LASTMA, Mr Young Arebanem proved futile.
