Gov’s Debate Finals Hold ’Morrow
Finalists are expected to emerge tomorrow in the third edition of the Annual Governor’s debate Cup competition amongst Secondary Schools in Rivers State which kicked off yesterday in Port Harcourt.
The event, which took place at Saint Andrew’s Primary School, Diobu, Port Harcourt, was contested by schools representing each of the 23 local government areas of Rivers State in both junior and senior categories.
At the end of the opening stage, eleven local government areas qualified for the quarter-final stage billed to hold, today at the same venue.
They are Eleme, Khana, Okrika, Andoni, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Port Harcourt and Omuma.
Others are Obio/Akpor, Abua/Odual, Emohua and Akuku-Toru.
Eleven local government areas also qualified for the senior category, and they are Etche, Akuku-Toru, Emohua, Abua/Odual, Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt and Ahoada-East.
Others are Khana, Eleme, Andoni and Okrika.
The co-ordinator of the programme in Port Harocurt City Local Government Area, Chief Onoka Ferdinand, who announced the results, commended the participants for their active participation.
He said in the semi-final stage which takes place today, four local government areas would qualify for the grand finale billed for Saturday.
Addressing newsmen after the event, Special Adviser to the Commissioner for Education, Barrister Victoria Anyanwu, said the competition was a brain child of the Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi aimed at developing the debating skills of the students to enable them interact and express themselves freely.
Barrister Anyanwu further explained that, “Nigeria: A Nation Without Oil”, which was one of the topics in yesterday’s stage of the contest was to prepare the minds of the young ones on how to sustain national development outside oil.
Winner of the first position at the final stage takes home N150,000, an Ipad and Scholarship, second prize goes home with laptop, N100,000 and scholarship while the third place grabs Books, N80,000 as well as scholarship.
The Special Adviser to the Commissioner said there would be prizes for the best speaker, best dressed students, amongst others.
According to her, Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi would present the prizes at the grand finale while Special Guest would be Prof. Elechi Amadi.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
