Boko Haram: Example Of A Good Father
Recently, Christians all over the world, observed Fathers’ Day, a day set aside to celebrate the important role fathers play in creating a safe and secure environment for human development, one that is both productive and stable.
The day was used to reflect on the increasing expectations of families, groups, institutions and governments on the critical significance of the father in the arduous tasks of procreation, providing the enabling building blocks for the family, erecting the framework and guiding principles for training, discipline and motivation that help nurture the child with the best values necessary for good upbringing and future development.
Over the years, critical observers of the falling value system in families, especially in Nigeria, had blamed fathers for abdicating their responsibilities and allowing peer group influence and the alien culture of violence to shape the lifestyles of their children at very youthful and adolescent age.
They had even alluded to the growing conviction that the rising moral decadence, crime and violence, including the spectre of insecurity that threatens the very foundations of the nation’s unity, stability, albeit, existence, are the bye-products of the failure of fathers to play their natural roles in their children’s upbringing and development.
This is why, the exemplary qualities of a Kanuri father, whose good conscience had encouraged him to shrug off the immutable blood bond that usually epitomises family relationships, to expose his own son’s evil crimes against humanity, in far away Maiduguri, Borno State requires special mention.
The 60-year old businessman from Hausari ward had handed over his son to men of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF), alleging the involvement of his son in countless killing of innocent persons, armed robbery and other heinous crimes in the name of Boko Haram. His son was said to have left the family house in April, after being inductrinated into the the Boko Haram insurgency campaign by joining the fundamentalist group under which he committed numerous murderous acts, amassed ill-gotten wealth, and even threatening to kill his father.
Residents of the area were said to have been enraged following the killer-son’s return and plea to the father to grant him refuge in their house as a means of escaping the onslaught of soldiers and members of the Youth Vigilante Group after fleeing insurgents from Kirenoa and Sambisa Games Reserve Forests.
We note the sterling qualities of the 60-year old man, and recommend the character of the Kanuri father for all responsible fathers, family members and the entire citizenry, if the current orgy of violence and criminality would not dstroy Nigeria.
We are happy that the man could muster the ability to say no to a son who refused to follow the path of honour and reason, and assisted in forcing him to face justice and account for his wrongs. We, indeed, believe that Nigerians with this kind of patriotic zeal and disposition to peace are rare and deserve some honour.
Without a doubt, if other parents would emulate the brave action of this father and share a little iota of his conscience, the reign of violence, criminality and insurgency in Nigeria, particularly in the North, would be a thing of the past.
Clearly, this should serve to warn the youth to re-direct their energies towards productive ventures for positive change, sustainable peace, stability, development, and good governance.
More than ever before, The Tide believes that with more fathers playing their roles assertively and with conscience, no matter the temptation and compelling tendency to do otherwise, Nigeria, and indeed, her citizens, will see the new Nigeria, everyone craves for.
