NOA Tasks Journalists, Others On FOI Act
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has charged journalists in particular and Nigerians in general to avail themselves of the opportunity offered by the Freedom Of Information (FOI) Act and ensure there is openness and transparency in government.
The NOA regretted that journalists who fought doggedly for the FOI Act are still passive as they have not taken the opportunity of the Act while many Nigerians don’t even understand what the Act is out to achieve.
Answering questions from The Tide in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Director of NOA, Mr Oliver Wolugbom won said “well, that law is not for journalists alone but journalists are among those that fought doggedly for it but surprisingly since the law came into being in 2011, journalists have not taken advantage of it”.
Wolugbom said, “That law is for all Nigerians the purpose is to help those in authority to be upright, to show that there’s openness, to show that things are done appropriately, unfortunately people have not even understood that FOL Act is for them ..”.
Asserting that the law is meant to sanitise the society the NOA State Director advised that ‘each and everyone of us’ should actively embrace it as the way forward for Nigeria.
Wolugbom said NOA, being aware of the importance of the FOI Act has begun intense enlighteness campaign and seminars at the federal, state and local government levels, adding that as soon as they receive ‘go-ahead’ from their head office we will go to the grassroot and begin to enlighten them on the benefits of the FOI Act..”.
