RSG Lists Gains Of Social Networks
The Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs Ibim Semenitari has described social networking as a critical factor in the developmental process.
Mrs Semenitari, who said this during the celebration of the World Communication Day 2013, Monday in Port Harcourt, also said that governments the world over believed that social networks are critical as mobilization tools.
The Commissioner described the theme for the celebration which is social Networks: Portals of Social Mobilisation as apt, stressing that it would help the ministry to build its capacity in social networking.
According to her, society must explore the opportunities provided by social networks to redirect the North-South Information flow, while issues of ethical conduct should also be addressed.
In his lecture entitled, Social Network; Portals of Truth and National Development,’ the Director Social Communication, Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt, Rev Father Chris Anyanwu, said that 1.2billion people are already hooked on the social media.
Rev Fr Anyanwu described the social media as a significant force in national development, and stressed that need for users to redirect it in community mobilization and development, while at the same time, employing it to promote the truth.
In her address at the occasion, a former Commissioner of Information in the state, Prof Bene Willie Abbey who was chairman of the occasion, described the celebration as unique as it reflects the trends in the digital age and environment.
She said that the tools can be adopted to enhance communication skills in the dissemination of information in government for the good of the communities.
Prof Abbey also stressed the importance of social media to the ministry of information and communications as it would help it to reach out to the people.
She further urged the society to recognize its cultural diversity present in the digital world, pointing out that all strata of society should reasonably utilize online facilities.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
