Rainstorm Destroys Property In Etche Community
Rainstorm has destroyed property worth millions of naira and rendered hundreds of people homeless at Egwi Community in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The natural disaster which affected the community de-roofed houses, collapsed buildings, destroyed economic trees like plantain and damaged high tension electric poles, among others.
The affected persons who are mostly rural dwellers include widows, the aged and the poor who are predominantly farmers, as well as the house of an elder statesman, Late Dr Eze Ogbueri Nwala.
The community spokesman, Chief Innocent Jumbo, while briefing newsmen in his palace at Egwi last Friday, expressed displeasure over what the disaster had caused the community since over five hundred years of its existence.
Chief Jumbo expressed appreciation to God that no life was lost, neither was there any casualty in the badly affected five villages – Umuchoko, Umuonyia, Umukoloche, Umuodagu and Umuokeni.
He appealed to the Ministry of Special Duties, Etche local government council, corporate organizations and public – spirited individuals to come to the aid of the victims.
One of the affected persons, a widow, Mrs Margareth Egbunefu said her building of five rooms was de-roofed, clothes and kitchen utensils were destroyed by rain water.
She said that she had been squatting with a relative appealing to Etche Local Government Council to assist her and other affected persons with relief materials.
