Onne Port Creates 30,000 Jobs
The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, said recently in Port Harcourt that Onne Port in Rivers State that was rehabilitated by the Federal Government had created 30, 000 jobs.
Maku, who made the remark at a Town Hall meeting during the Good Governance Tour of the state, said the fourth phase of the project covered 9,000 hectares of land which was expected to be delivered in August.
Maku said the project was one of the Federal Government’s infrastructure developments that would not only create jobs for the people but also improve the economic base of the nation. He said the government was targeting power and transport because of their importance to development.
Maku commended the Rivers State government for helping to generate power for the people but said the Federal Government was trying its best to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the nation.
He said that the government had delivered the Lagos-Kano rail line to enhance rail transportation, adding that the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail line was on course.
“We may not have finished at Port Harcourt end but I want to assure you that at the end of the year, the rehabilitation of railway will be completed at the Port Harcourt end,“ Maku said.
He said that already, work on the line had reached Aba, Abia, axis through Makurdi and would soon get to Port Harcourt.
The minister said that government was also building a new line that would run from Lagos to Calabar. He commended Gov. Rotimi Amaechi for his achievements in the state, especially in agriculture, roads, education and sports.
Maku urged the people of the state to resist any form of insecurity in the state in order to safeguard the people-oriented projects already put in place.
“Make peace and security your watchwords,’’ he said.
