Schools Sports, Vehicle For Talent Discovery – Amaechi
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, says school sport is a veritable tool for talent discovery and a unifying factor.
Governor Amaechi said this while declaring open the 5th National School Sports Festival (NSSF) at Liberation Stadium, Elekahia, Port Harcourt.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi expressed delight with “the rapid development of our children in sporting activities, pointing out that school sports is a medium for uniting children and catching them young with a view to developing their skills in sports for future generation.
Welcoming the contingents from the 22 participating states to the State, Governor Amaechi, who is also Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), assured them of a peaceful stay, urging them to be law-abiding and follow all instructions given to them in the camp.
In his speech, the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, represented by Chairman, National Academical Sports Commission, Mr Yemi Idowu, charged the athletes to remain focused in achieving their set targets, stating that “discipline is the key to achieving whatever one wishes to become in life”.
Speaking, the Minister of State for Education, Barr. Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, represented by a Director in the ministry, Mrs Nneka Okoye, noted that sports is an integral part of Education, disclosing that physical and Health Education would henceforth be integrated into the National Curriculum as an examinable subject.
Also speaking, President of the NSSF, Mr Ibrahim Muhammad, expressed optimism that this year’s edition of the festival “would witness the breaking of records among our children,” lauding Governor Amaechi for creating an enabling atmosphere for the children to boost their talents.
In his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Fred Igwe, welcomed the athletes and declared that “Rivers State is a destination for sports, as “Governor Ameechi and his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, have done a lot to promote sports development in the state”.
