Amaechi Swears-In New Special Duties Commissioner
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has sworn in the new Commissioner for Special Duties in the state.
He is Barr. Dickson Umunakwe who replaced Emeka Wogu that was recently relieved of his appointment.
Barr. Umunakwe was Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor between 2008 and 2011.
After the brief swearing-in ceremony at the council chambers, Wednesday, Governor Chibuike Amaechi congratulated the new Special Duties Commissioner on his appointment, and directed him to do an evaluation of government ability to fight any possible fire outbreak in the state.
The governor said, “let me congratulate you on your appointment and restate here that the reason for the sack of your predecessor is simply because he refused to take his assignment seriously. We could not have agreed in the cabinet to get the vehicles for preventing or fighting fire to be functional, money duly released and no vehicles were working.”
You can imagine if Agip did not intervene, the level of damage we would have had around Ikoku and its environs during that fire outbreak. So, your basic assignment now is to do an evaluation of the current situation of our capacity to fight fire. There should not be another fire incident without our ability to bring to a stop the spread of that fire and the damages that will occur. So, as you assume office, that should be your first assignment”, Amaechi said.
The Special Duties Commissioner, Barr. Dickson Umunakwe, in an interview with journalists, thanked God and the governor for his appointment, and promised to carry out an evaluation of the state’s fire fighting ability as directed by the governor.
He also called for private sector participation in fighting fire in the state.
He said, “first of all, I have to give thanks to God for a day like this, and then secondly, I have to thank His Excellency the governor who has found it worthy to call me to serve on a higher pedestal. I tell people everyday, fighting fire is not for government alone, you are also a stakeholder, the private sector is also a stakeholder.
I want to implore everybody to tackle the issue of fire incidents in Rivers State. Everybody should join hands with government and we must observe the safety standards in fire prevention”, he said.
