Enugu Stops Registration Of Cabs, Tricycles
The Enugu State Government, has
stopped the registration of new taxis and tricycles to sanitise the state, the
Commissioner for Transport, Mr Chuka Utazi, has said.
Utazi told newsmen in
Enugu last Wednesday that the idea was to curb the spate of crime in the state.
He said that some of the cabs had been used to commit various
crimes in the state, adding that it had become incumbent on the government to
restrict the influx into the business.
The commissioner said the influx of cabs into the state had
become alarming and was causing nuisance, hence the need to check their
activities.
“The ministry will soon come out with new registration
guidelines to monitor their operation in the state,’’ he said.
The commissioner also said that the coal city drivers who got their vehicles on hire purchase complained that the influx of private operators affected the repayment of their loan.
Utazi explained that this would help the government to recoup
the money spent in purchasing the cabs.
He said the ministry was working with the police to fish out
the bad eggs among the cab operators.
Utazi said that 2,500 tricycles had so far been registered in
the coal city, saying that the government was also registering commercial
buses.
He urged motorists in the state to shun reckless driving and
obey traffic rules to ensure an accident and crime free yuletide.
