Commissioner Tasks LG Assessors
The commissioner for Local Government
Affairs, Mr. Sam Eyiba has urged the team of experts engaged for the 2012
assessment of Local Government programmes and policies to be forthright in
their task.
The Commissioner gave the charge at the pre-flag-off assessment
meeting with members of the team in his office.
Mr. Eyiba said the
ministry had come to terms with the reality and benefits of the synergy between
it and the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency, RSSDA in charting a new
culture of responsive governance at the local government level in the state.
The commissioner noted that since the independent assessors
began the work of ascertaining the extend, funds were explored and
administrative affairs were stirred at the council levels coupled with the
several capacity building programme, council chairmen and legislators have
improved on their obligation to serve the people.
This realisation is endearing local governance to the people
and nobody would gladly demand the scrapping of the third tier of government
because things are changing and working for the good of the people.
Leader of the team, Professor Nkechi Mbanefo said the
assessment exercise was in its fourth year with effort consistently geared to
create a new spirit of service among council chairmen and their officers who
now do not only keep records of programmes but embark on projects that have
direct impact on the people.
She commended the state governor for setting the pace and
creating conducive environment for some Rivers state councils to be regarded as
models.
At the flag-off ceremony in Degema LGA, the Executive
Director of RSSDA, Mr Noble Pepple, represented by the head, technical services
in the Agency, Mr. Mitchell Alamina said the initiative would continue to push
for both infrastructural and administrative programmes in LGAs.
He noted that the change needed at the grassroots to
guarantee good governance, would ensure that real development dependent on how
well councils perform.
