UNICEF’s Health Sector Support Excites RSG
The Rivers State Government has expressed gratitude to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for its contribution towards improvement of the quality of lives of the people in Rivers State.
The Commissioner, Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Gogo Levi Charles, who said this in Port Harcourt during the opening ceremony of a three-day UNICEF-assisted training on Social Planning and Budgeting for Children and Women, particularly commended the agency for contributing towards the reduction of infant and maternal mortality.
Mr. Charles, who was representd by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Sir Promise Chinda Njiowhor said that the programme goes further to confirm the unity of purpose between UNICEF and the state government on issues affecting the people, particularly women and children who are the most vulnerable segments of the society.
He said that Governor Amaechi’s achievements in the areas of education, health agriculture and road infrastructure remain unique and outstanding throughout the federation. Mr. Charles noted that all the issues canvassed in the document under review covers; health and nutrition, basic education, water, sanitation and hygiene.
He stressed the need for participants of the forum to key into the programme by updating their skills in development planning and budgeting, as it will prepare them for greater challenges in life.
Sir Njiowhor, who also spoke in his capacity as the permanent secretary of the ministry and chairman of the occasion, said that the three days training would go along way in helping policy makers prepare annual budget for women and children.
He also advised the participants to take the outcome of the workshop seriously.
