FRSC Cautions Motorists Against Laminating Number Plates
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)
in Minna Mr David Usman, last Wednesday cautioned motorists in the state
against using laminated number plates.
Usman said in an interview with newsmen that the caution
became necessary to safeguard security number plate and other safety features.
“We discourage the use of lamination on the number plates in
order to safeguard the security and safety features on it.
“It is produced in such a way that it has important
significant security features on it, it illuminates at night so that a vehicle
coming behind will know that there is something in front.
“So, it is ideal not to cover your number plates, it is
illegal and that is why we are trying to discourage the practice,’’ he said.
The commander said the command had begun the enlightenment
of motorists in the state on the dangers of covering their number plates.
He said they had not started arresting people for the
practice, but added: “When we stop them on the road we insist that they remove
the waterproof laminations before allowing them to go.
“The interpretation of covering number plates is that the
person has criminal intent; you don’t want somebody to identify you when you
are committing a crime.’’
Meanwhile, Mr Isa Alfa, a motorist, told our correspondent that he used waterproof to cover his vehicle number plate to beautify it but removed the covering after the enlightenment by FRSC.
Mrs Nkechi Okeafor said that she covered her vehicle number
plate with waterproof in order to protect it from dent and bad weather.
She said “it took me more than N33, 000 to get it.”
