Don Harps On Importance Of Research
A University don with the Ignatius Ajuru University of
Education, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt Rivers State, Professor Stephen Uche has
described empirical research as a fundamental to the development of education
in the society.
Professor Uche, who is a lecturer in the Department of
Curriculum Studies, Faculty of Education, IAUE, made the assertion while
presenting a paper titled, “Towards An Effective Preparation of Academic
Curriculum Vitae (CV) and Highlighting the Determinants of Academic Research
and Progression through the Academic Ladder,” during a one-day workshop
organised by the Faculty of Humanities on curriculum vitae writing held at the
University auditorium.
He defined curriculum vitae as a self-report document in which
an individual packages himself for presentation to a superior person for the
purposes of decision making that would improve on the life of the person so
packaged.
The University lecturer while presenting the lecture warned
against any forms of malpractices including plagiarism, forging and
manipulation of research data adding that such acts could lead to some forms of
embarrassment and humiliation.
He stated that Universities were primarily centres, of excellence in terms of research
adding that research outputs from Universities and institutes play a critical
role in reshaping landscapes with resultant improvement in human lives.
“Universities by their nature and concept of Ivory Tower
confer on them the status of Centre of Excellence which requires thoroughness
adequacy in all that is done in the system” while enjoining members of the
academia to strive to publish their work in either national or international
journals so as to reach top in their career.
Also in his paper titled, “ The University Professor’s job.
A Knowledge – Leadership Cum-collegial-mentorship Conceptualisation”, the
Director, ICT Centre, IAUE Prof. Dele Joshua Osahogulu, described a University
Professor as the leading knowledge – productive worker, whose primary
occupational human relation interest is significant contribution to the growth
and development of humans and society at large.
Earlier in his address, Acting Dean, Faculty of Humanities,
IAUE, Dr. Kingdom Orji, said the workshop was held against the backdrop of
sub-standard curriculum vitae packaged by most academic staff and described CV
as a veritable image maker that sums up the essential aspect of one’s
personality and achievement.
