Abuja Rail Project Targets 1m Jobs
The Abuja mass transit rail
project would create over one million jobs for Nigerians, the Minister of
Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sen. Bala Mohammed, has said.
Mohammed stated this at Idu,
Abuja, yesterday, during a tour of the project, which was being executed at the
cost of $823 million.
The tour is part of the ongoing
inspection of Federal Government projects across the country christened: “Good
Governance Tour”, organised by the Federal Ministry of Information.
He said that the jobs would be
directly and indirectly linked to the operation and other activities at the
train stations.
He added that the rail project,
when completed, would transport over two million passengers daily to different
destinations in the FCT and neighbouring states.
The minister said that the first
phase of the project would cover 45 kilometres, adding that 50 per cent of the
materials for the project were procured locally.
On the maintenance of the
facility, the minister said steps had been taken to train skilled and unskilled
manpower to ensure proper maintenance.
He added that the government would
also enter into a concessionary agreement with the private sector on the
maintenance of the facility to ensure sustainability.
The minister explained that the
administration had secured a 500 million dollar loan from the Chinese
Government for the completion of the project.
He said the loan would be repaid within
20 years with a 2.5 per cent interest.
Mohammed also said the
administration had paid N178 million as compensation and for the resettlement
of residents displaced by the project along airport road.
In his remarks, the Minister of
Information, Mr Labaran Maku, commended the the FCT Administration for the
initiative, which he also said would take off many youths from the streets.
He expressed optimism that the
project, when completed, would address transportation problem in the city.
The Project Manager, Mr Yuan Yong
of China Civil Engineering and Construction Company, assured that the project
would be completed by 2015.
He put the level of work done so
far at 22 per cent.
