FG Assures On Road Safety Strategy Implementation
The Federal Government on Monday assured of the
implementation of the Four-Year (2012-2016) Road Safety Strategy, aimed at
reducing road traffic accidents in the country.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen.
Anyim Pius Anyim, gave the assurance when he received Mr Per Mathiasen, the
World Bank Road Safety Specialist in charge of Sub-Saharan Africa Transport
Policy Programme.
The strategy document was developed by the FRSC in
collaboration with stakeholders in line with the commitment of Nigeria to
United Nations Decade of Action of road safety, aimed at 50 per cent reduction
in road crashes by 2015.
The SGF commended the World Bank for various assistance to
Nigeria, especially the support to the nation in the area of road safety, which
he described as a major challenge to the country.
Anyim said the 320 million dollar-World Bank facility was
being used to finance the Federal Roads Development Programme, adding that 10
million dollars of the money was being dedicated to the safety sub component of
some of the road corridors across the country.
“The collaboration of the World Bank with the country
through the Federal Road Safety Commission under the Federal Roads Development
Programme has been very commendable.
“The highlight of the cooperation is the safe Corridor
Project (SCP), in which safety component is being given high consideration in
roads construction and rehabilitation,’’ he said.
Earlier, Mathiasen had told the SGF that the bank selected
Nigeria as a model in Africa and would continue to support it toward the
actualisation of the UN Decade of Action on Road Safety.
The team was accompanied by the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief
Executive, Mr Osita Chidoka, who noted that the strategy document was needed
for the next phase of intervention by the Word Bank.
