First Ladies of African countries have been advised to take a leading position in the search for a lasting peace in Africa.
The Director-General, Institute for peace and conflict Resolution, Dr. Joseph Golwa, gave the advice, early in the week, during a meeting of the committee of experts held in Abuja, ahead of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM).
The Director-General who reviewed some conflict situations in Africa, conceded that inspite of efforts to address conflict in Africa, Peace had remained elusive, hence the need to initiate appropriate intervention measures to tackle the crises.
According to him, two decades after the 1990 report on Africa which described the continent as “troubled, poor and undeveloped”, the continent still wallows in poverty.
He therefore urged the African first ladies to exploit their spousal role towards enthroning good governance, as a tool against greed, inequality and injustice, which he spotted as causes of current conflicts in Africa.
As many countries of African Wrestle with issues of conflict, Dr. Golwa said the security challenges facing Africa had impeded its development, while affecting the population and families in particular.
“Although most African nations where faced with task of nation building, after their independence; their efforts were hindered by ethnic or divisive politics and environmental issues like drought, among other factors”, he added.
Inspite of the economic, Ideological and Social issues also highlighted as part of the rationale for most conflicts in Africa, Golwa concludes that the attainment of peace in the continent of Africa, is a possibility.
The Director-General noted that even though the African First ladies did not have political powers or weapons, they have a very strong voice to canvass for peace by virtue of their positions in their respective countries.
He therefore, called for new approaches towards the actualization of peace in the region. “The African first ladies have some pivotal roles to play in that regard”, he said.
Calling on the First Ladies to agitate for peace while contentious issues were still regional, he urged them to use their voice for advocacy to embark on peace building campaigns across the continent, adding that their input would definitely promote the growth of Africa.
Golwa encouraged the first ladies to strive to tackle sensitive issues like cultural and religious conflicts.
“They have a lot to do and they have the capacity to perform well”, he said.
