Commission Uncovers Retirement Fraud At LGAs
The Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, says, inexperienced and poor management of some local government areas are responsible for poor governance in some local government councils in the state.
The Commission Chairman, Chief Azubuike Nmerikini made the observation over the weekend in a chat with The Tide, after the commission’s meeting with directors and other key officers of the 23 local government areas of the state in Port Harcourt.
Chief Nmerukini who spoke through one of the commissioners, Hon Paul Awoyesuku said that the only way to ensure good governance and meaningful progress at the local government level, was to replace inexperienced and sluggish personnel with those who are willing to work.
The Commission chairman said, the meeting was to address personnel data collection problems, retirement issues, and attendance to work and associated challenges.
According to him over 307 civil servants in 2011 and 2012 alone were due for retirements but refused to be retired.
“We discovered that over 307 civil servants for last year and this year alone were due for retirement, but people in the system falsified records to allow them remain in the service.
“This time around, the Commission will not tolerate such fraudulent acts, but to make sure salaries collected after the original date of retirement was due is deducted from their retirement benefits”, the commission chairman said.
He used the opportunity to call on all civil servants who are due for retirement to notify the commission in time to avoid the anger of the commission.
Chief Nmerukini also warned that the commission would not hesitate to deal with any personnel guilty of conniving with the council chairmen to defraud the council purse.
