Congress: Rivers PDP Chairman Assures On Fairness
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Chief Godpower Ake, has assured party members across the state of a level playing field during the local government and state congresses of the party.
While the party congress to elect members of the executive committees in the 23 local government areas of the state is slated for this Saturday, the congress to choose members of the state executive committee is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2012.
Chief Ake who gave the assurance in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt said the party would continue to provide a level playing field for all members of the party interested to occupy various positions during the congresses.
While lauding the peaceful conduct of last Saturday’s ward congress across the state, he assured that the party would not impose anybody on the party members during the remaining congresses.
He said during the ward congress, the various wards were given a free hand to choose those to lead the party, stressing that the fact that party members did not fight themselves during the exercise was an indication that they were satisfied with the measures put in place by the party to ensure a hitch-free exercise.
The party chairman also noted that the PDP would always respect and abide by the tenets of democracy in choosing those to lead the party at the various levels, saying, in a democracy, some people are bound to be successful during elections while others are bound to lose.
He, therefore, urged party members who are not elected during the congresses to remain loyal party members by accepting the outcome of the congresses in the spirit of sportsmanship.
Chief Ake further assured that the process of choosing members of the executive committees of the party during Saturday’s local government congress would be less cumbersome, compared to last Saturday’s exercise, noting that the process leading to the ward congress was cumbersome considering the fact that the party had to make sure that materials were distributed to all the 319 wards of the state.
He said the party would continue to conduct peaceful and hitch-free congresses across the state, stressing that during the ward congress, the party had drafted its personnel in all the wards and local government areas of the state to monitor and supervise the exercise.
According to him, the party deployed two persons in each of the wards and three persons in each of the local government areas.
