Between Hospitality Industry And Culture Promotion (11)
As tourism is sensitive to economic activity so does culture provide stable earnings, even though it is not a spectacular net earner of foreign exchange for developing countries such as Nigeria.
In some countries, culture tends to improve economy at a higher rate than merchandise exports and it is important for Nigeria to follow that path.
Given the induced effects of tourism on hotels and other activities such as building, and agriculture, culture can be promoted through the hospitality industry. The benefits from culture and tourism are realistic and could be projected and accelerated by the hospitality industry. Hoteliers should recognise that in partial fulfillment of their responsibilities, the possibility of promoting culture by way of organising cultural events is a worthwhile venture.
It should not be seen as an unnecessary investment and worthless spending, but should be regarded as a flexible adventure to overcome seasonal problems and stress.
No country can achieve rapid growth in tourism until the greater part of the its tourist potential developed. We should bear in mind that tourism and culture go together, and so culture can not be distanced from the hospitality industry considering its economic importance to maximise returns to the tourist industry.
Culture promotion is one of the advantages tourism brings to the society. That is why the Rivers State government plays a major role in organising the annual cultural carnival; and since its inception few years ago, the prospect has been promising. It is important that the private sector take advantage of this prospect by investing in tourism and culture promotion. The private sector is more likely to provide realistic assessment, and knowledge required for tourism and culture-related activities.
While venturing into these investments, hoteliers have to embark on what is called cooperative promotion campaigns to provide a comprehensive tour of regional attractions. Marketing of our local cultures by the hospitality industry might help to extend the tourist season and increase the duration of hotel occupancy, thereby raise the profits of hotels.
It therefore, behoves the Rivers State Ministry of Culture and Tourism to build tourism centres so as to attract foreign and local visitors. If there are frequent visitors to the tourism centres, the state will witness improved economy, high employment opportunities for youths, high standard of living for the citizenry, while the hotels experience high patronage.
There is need for the private sector organisations in the state including hotels to collaborate with the Rivers State Government to sustain culture and tourism industry by investing in tourism centres, such as conference centres, amusement parks, museums, cultural centres, wild-life conservation centres and other tourist attraction centres. The creation of mini-cultural centres in parts of the state will provide a good link between culture and tourism. To achieve maximum returns from tourism investment, it is necessary to concentrate it in priority areas where consumer preferences are certain.
