NLNG Boss Wants Active Participation In Gas Industry
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG), Engineer Chima Ibeneche, says for Nigeria to tap fully the abundant potentials in the gas industry, there was urgent need to increase participation in monitoring and enforcement of the local content laws.
Ibeneche made the observation last Friday at the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) 2011 award ceremony held at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt.
The NLNG boss who delivered a keynote address titled “Local Content Opportunties in the Nigeria Gas Industry”, said the demand for domestic gas was lagging behind when compared to other high gas reserve countries and other liquefied natural gas producing countries for the world.
Ibeneche who won the Professional Competence Award of PETAN advised that gas energy should provide opportunities in boosting export, transportation, local or domestic use and in power generation, stressing that when done, it would strengthen the nation’s economy.
Describing Nigeria content law as a big plus, Engineer Ibeneche stressed that time had come for the government to be more active in implementation of the law so that companies and operators in the gas industry comply with the rules and regulations in the industry.
He urged PETAN members to continue to work to ensure that they contribute actively towards the growth of the gas industry.
The NLNG boss noted that Nigeria has the 7th largest reserves in the world with 186Tcf and potential 600Tcf but regretted that the nation was poor because the abundant potentials were not fully tapped towards helping the economy.
He listed poor commercial framework, inadequate gas infrastructure, focus on export gas projects, lack of funding and weak institutional and legislative framework as major challenges facing the gas industry in Nigeria.
Engineer Ibeneche maintained that it was imperative for governments, clients and contractors to work together in order to create the right environment to increase local content, remove road blocks to development and pave the way to success.
PETAN chairman, Shawley Coker, in his opening remarks said the association which was registered in 1990 with the vision to domestic petroleum industry in Nigeria had played major role in implementing the local content law and urged chief executive officers of oil industry and government’s agencies to co-operate with the new leadership of the association which would be constituted February next year.
