CARNIRIV: Organisers Unveil Programme
Arrangements for the kick-starting of the Season Four of the internationally acclaimed Port Harcourt Carnival has now been finalised, with the fiesta commencing December 13, 2011, at the Carnival Village, Liberation Stadium, Elekahia, Port Harcourt.
Organisers of the top-line composite cultural and entertainment festival, in a statement made available to The Tide yesterday, indicated that the five-day carnival, with the theme, “Our Culture, Our Future”, would end December 17.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Nabbs Imegwu assured residents, tourists and visitors as well as investors that the state was committed to deepening and exploiting the opportunities for cultural integration which the carnival exemplifies.
Imegwu added that the 2011 carnival will not only exceed the records set by the 2010 event, but would significantly strengthen and sustain the opportunities for economic expansion already achieved by the present administration of Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in the last four years.
He noted that drawing from the turn-out, impact and major learning points from the 2010 edition, the 2011 fiesta would be more exciting, bigger and better, with increased avenues for improved visibility for Port Harcourt as a truly emerging global tourist destination.
Also speaking, the CARNIRIV consultants, MessageWise Limited stated that unlike its contemporaries across the nation, the carnival showcases unrivalled cultural fiesta with lots of fun, heritage and extensive cultural content that would compete with the best cultural festival in the world.
According to the programme of events, the opening ceremony of the carnival, with three sub-themes, “Celebrating Positive Change”, “Sustainable Co-existence”, and “Our Culture, Our Pride”, will officially hold Tuesday, December 13, 2011, while a Children’s Parade will take place shortly after the opening ceremony.
A cursory look at the programme shows that a boat regatta would take place at the Port Harcourt Tourist Beach, in addition to a novel but glamorous ladies’ night at the Carnival Village the next day.
It further indicated that there would be a reggae/old skool/talent night on December 15 at the Carnival Village.
The programme also revealed that the flagship carnival days of December 16 and 17, will feature two days of spectacular street parade by the 23 local government areas Heritage Floats and five freestyle bands, respectively, just as the Old Port Harcourt Town Groove titillates tourists, visitors and residents to never-ending cultural fiesta at Aggrey Road.
The organisers say that the carnival week will climax with a peace concert on Saturday night at the Carnival Village, stressing that in a bid to deepen the message of peace and security consciousness, a special pre-carnival Grand Finale of the Miss ECOWAS Peace Pageant has been slated to hold December 10, in Port Harcourt, with contestants drawn from the West African countries.
It would be recalled that the organisers had earlier endorsed star Nollywood actress, Monalisa Chinda, a Rivers-born movie sensation, as the face of the carnival for 2011.
