C’River To Institutionalise Calabar Carnival
Governor of Cross River, Liyel Imoke said in Calabar, that the state government
would institutionalise the Calabar Carnival in order to make it a lifelong event.
Imoke said this while briefing newsmen on preparations for this year’s Carnival due to begin today.
He said that institutionalising the carnival would make it to grow and become part of the people.
“We are working toward institutionalising the Carnival Calabar, so that it will grow and become of tremendous benefit to the people,” he said.
The governor said that the carnival had continued to grow bigger by the year, adding that a lot of value had been added into it.
“The carnival is now attracting big sponsorship from various business groups in the country compared with when it started.
“We created a brand for this event and now we have sponsors who have come to identify with this event.”
Imoke commended the sponsors of the 2011 Carnival Calabar — First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Dangote Group and Guinness Nigeria for their partnership.
“When you have three of the most dynamic business enterprises in the country, it means that they have seen a product that has value.”
The governor, who said that the state budgeted N600 million for the carnival, added that adequate security arrangement had been made to ensure a hitch-free event.
“We are setting up 20 heavily-armed quick response intervention squads in different locations to respond to emergency situations during the carnival,” he stressed.
Earlier, Mr Anthony Ikogwe, the Area Sales Manager of Guinness Nigeria said that the company was partnering with the state to make it a bigger event, adding that “we will try to make the carnival a memorable event.”
