‘N40bn Needed To Fight Sleeping Sickness’
The National Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) in Kaduna says it needs N40 billion to eradicate the disease.
The Chairman of NITR Governing Board, Mr Okechukwu Oguwah, stated this when he visited Gov. Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State, Friday.
Trypanosomiasis, also called sleeping sickness disease caused by tsetse fly which is transmitted to animals and human beings through contact.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 60 million people in Africa are at risk of being infected with the ailment.
WHO’s recent report showed that 500,000 people have already been infected by the disease while 25,000 of those infected in Africa die every year.
The report further stated that the disease had affected more than 75 per cent of the country’s landmass, covering all the agro-ecological zones of the country.
Oguwah said the UN had advised African nations to contribute to research and eradication of the disease in the affected countries.
He said that most African countries had recorded cases of the disease with the exception of Botswana, adding that the ailment was a major constraint to livestock production, mixed farming and human health.
Oguwah appealed to the state government to support the institute to enable it rid the continent of the disease.
He added that the institute was also involved in the research and cure for river blindness.
Responding, Governor Yakowa commended the institute for its efforts in research and awareness creation to eradicate trypanosomiasis and river blindness in the country.
The governor, who said the research effort would boost the health sector in the continent, assured the institute of necessary support.
