Expert Urges FG To Invest In Agriculture, Green Energy
A top official of ActionAid International, Mr Jasper Lauridsen, has urged the Federal Government to prioritise its developmental needs by investing in sustainable agriculture and green energy.
Lauridsen, a specialist on Innovative National Development Strategy, made the call on Wednesday in Abuja at a stakeholders consultative forum organised by ActionAid Nigeria.
He argued that for Nigeria to attain its goal of being one of the world’s best economies by year 2020, the government needed to refocus on agriculture and the environment.
“For self-reliant growth of Nigeria, the government must engage in stimulus spending for low carbon development, investment in sustainable agriculture, green energy and provide green jobs.
“It (government) must focus on reducing deforestation, multiple taxation and also concentrate efforts on mitigating the effects of climate change,’’ he said.
Lauridsen also cited universal access to public health, education, social justice and employment opportunities with good benefits as requirements for manpower development.
“We need to come up with multiple alternatives to face financial, economic, food, and social crisis caused by the traditional model and practices of governance.
“ Fair employment, decent work and fair wages, using the international labour standards for wages, commissions and benefits must be considered.
“Also, social protection and the need to promote women’s rights, by engaging women in policy making decisions and decent work contracts with benefits are necessary,’’ he said.
He observed that reducing inequalities in the society would enhance national development, adding that government must adopt alternative strategies focused on people-led development that recognised the socio-economic rights of citizens.
“Such things as right to food and employment schemes, old age and feasibility support, access to credit, equality in cash transfer schemes and land reforms are very effective ways of redistributing wealth.
“Also, participatory budgeting and planning people- centred governance is needed,” he said.
Lauridsen urged civil society organisations in the country not to work in isolation, saying they must develop new modalities that were holistic and support efforts to liberate the people.
“For Nigeria to be truly self-reliant, it should depend less on international financial banking system, but rather increase its local markets output.
“Nigeria needs to have total access and control over its natural resources by regulating extractive industries; this would promote public investment in infrastructure and expansion of public services for the people,’’ he said. (NAN)
