Shippers Councils To Negotiate Freight Rates
Mr Sengne Diop, Secretary General of Union of African Shippers Councils, has advised the union’s Committee on Trade and Transport to henceforth negotiate freight rates with ship owners.
Diop gave the charge at a joint meeting of the union’s committees which kicked off in Abuja on Monday.
He said the committee should monitor the cost of cargo transportation , port charges and other charges being enforced in the transportation chain.
He said the committee should also assess the impact on prices of the transported goods. The secretary general told the committee to study issues relating to the management of sea freight in the sub-region and the implementation of national regulations.
He urged the committee to also propose means and ways of promoting multi-modal transportation system in the sub-region.
Diop told the committee to suggest ways to improve transport services in landlocked countries.
He also urged the Committee on Cooperation and Regulation to study the state of councils’ foreign relations and make proposals to improve on them. Diop told the committee to propose measures for creating shippers’ council in African countries where there were none and to reactivate dormant shippers councils.
He said that there was the need to consolidate on existing shippers councils and create unity among council members.
Diop said the committee should propose measures to harmonise national regulations relating to maritime transportation.
He also stressed the need for proper functioning of the regional, national and maritime data bank.
Our correspondent reports that the meeting is being attended by 16 countries.
The countries are Nigeria, Gabon, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun and Senegal.
Others are from: Congo, Cote D’ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equitorial Guiinea, Mali, Togo, Guinea Conakry, Ghana and Niger.
