Review Of Security Policy In Edo Underway
The Edo State government will soon review its policy on security to tackle the challenges posed by kidnappers and assassins in the state.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who made this known to newsmen on Wednesday in Benin, said that government had expended huge resources in fighting crimes.
According to him, N240 million has been spent on communications gadgets for security agents in the state.
He said that he would meet with heads of security agencies to review their operational tactics.
Oshimhole commended the the State Security Service (SSS) operatives for their courage and doggedness in apprehending criminals, saying that government would intensify its fight against crimes.
In the last 10 days three prominent sons of the state were kidnapped while more than 10 persons, including five police officers were allegedly murdered.
He said government had to persuade the Federal Government to allow the military to complement the efforts of local enforcement agents.
The governor said vehicles and communication gadgets had also been provided to enhance police effectiveness during patrols and at the checkpoints.
“The police, army, SSS among others and I do not control any of these. I do not have power of disciplinary measure or power to reward.
“The Federal Government should ensure that security agencies are adequately funded; this is why they (FG) receive the lion share from the
federation account.”
Oshiomhole condoled with the families of the deceased. Meanwhile, State Security Service, SSS in the state said the security operatives have successfully apprehended some suspected kidnappers and fraudsters who have been terrorizing the State.
Edo State director of the outfit, Alhaji Bello-Tukur Bakori who paraded the suspects before newsmen said the hoodlums were arrested in Ologbo Community, in the State and Sapele in neigbouring Delta State.
The suspects were alleged to have abducted a 70-year-Old woman for three days, but however returned her when they discovered the victim was indisposed. It was at the point that undercover operation arrested the suspect.
Besides, a five man kidnapping gang including a 40-year-old man are also cooling their feet at the Security operatives cell for kidnapping one Cynthia Osas Otubu and collecting the sum of N270, 000.00 before requesting for another N400, 000. 00.
Similarly, the SSS swoop on the fraudsters and suspected kidnappers who had abandoned their operational vehicle after kidnapping a Nigerian and fled. But one of the suspects who attempted to recover their operational van was arrested.
