60 Students Win Firm’s N12m Scholarships
No fewer than 60 students drawn from six tertiary institutions in the country benefited from the Etisalat Scholarship scheme last Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Speaking during the scholarship award ceremony held at Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt, the Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat, a fast growing telecommunication Company in Nigeria, Mr. Steven Evans said that the scholarship scheme is in the tune of N12 million. Mr. Evans also said that the beneficiaries were selected from the six tertiary Institutions in the South-South and South-East geo-political zones of the country.
He further added that each of the beneficiaries would receive N100,000 stressing that the gesture was part of the corporate social responsibility service of the company tagged “Merit Award” in its operational communities.
Mr Evans disclosed that already 460 students in 26 Universities across the country have so far benefited from the scheme which covers three years in each award.
He explained that Etisalat’s corporate social responsibility proramme, basically supports a number of educational initiatives which include corporate social responsibility department in Lagos Business School, enhancing teachers education in terms of teaching English Language, Merit Awards Scholarship Scheme and the Adoption of a school programme in which the company identifies needs of schools and work towards solving them.
A motivational speaker in the country Mr. Niyi Adesanya urged the awardees, to see the opportunity as a challenge to work harder in order to be good ambassadors of the society.
In an appreciation message, Director, Information Technology in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Solomon Braide, who represented the Vice Chancellor, RSUST, Prof. Barine Fakae, thanked the company for the awards, saying that it would help to improve academic performance of the students.
