Man Bags Six Months For Car Theft
A Port Harcourt magistrates court has sentenced a middle aged man, Mr Simon Obiefule, to a two years and six months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a venagon bus.
Mr Obiefule, 31 was arraigned on a two count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecuting police, Sergent Aaron Nsirem told the court that the accused, who resides at Obidianso water front in Diobu area of Port Harcourt in the Port Harcourt magistarial district did conspire to commit stealing.
The prosecution further alleged that the accused and others at large stole one venagon bus with registration number XN285 PHC valued at N280,000 belonging to one Mr Fidelis Okporo of No. 135 Ikwerre Road, Mile I Diobu Port Harcourt.
The prosecution said that the offence was punishable under section 516 A (1), and 390 of the criminal code cap 37 Vol. 2 laws of Rivers State.
During the trial, Sergeant Aaron Nsirem told the court that the accused snatched the vehicle on September 28, 2010 from its drive one Mr Saviour Dicker adding that all efforts to retrieve the bus before his arrest proved abortive.
He had earlier objected to the accused being granted bail on the grounds that the accused belonged to the armed robbery syndicate that has been terrorising the state.
According to him, a team of police men who acted on information arrested the accused person at Mbaise, Imo State adding that during interrogation, the accused failed to give account of the bus.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced accordingly by the trial magistrate, Mr. B. Babe.
