RSG To Enforce Drug Management Laws
The Rivers State Government says it would henceforth begin the enforcement of all laws regulating drug management and use in the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Godwin Mpi stated this last Tuesday while speaking to members of the newly constituted Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Mpi said counterfeit medical products present overwhelming global public health problems, causing deaths, disability and injury to adults and children
The Permanent Secretary disclosed that illegal distribution and rampant use of counterfeit drugs has led to loss of confidence in the health system, adding that there is a large market for fake and counterfeit drugs due to the chaotic distribution system in Nigeria.
Dr. Mpi, who cited the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria Act 91 of 1992 and section 9 of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act 25 of 1999 said all unregistered pharmaceutical and patent medicine stores would be identified and sealed.
He also said unregistered fake and counterfeit drugs or packaged food would be confiscated and offenders fined or prosecuted.
Meanwhile the taskforce on fake and counterfeit drugs has raided the Ogbunabali, Trans-Amadi, Amadi-Ama and the Abuloma axis of Port Harcourt, where it sealed about 15 shops and confiscated drugs worth thousands of Naira.
According to the Director of Pharmaceutical Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Clement Anwuri, who led the exercise said the task force would continue to raid all nooks and crannes of the state to ensure that the battle against fake and counterfeit drugs and unwholesome processed foods and their dealers are kicked out of the state.
