ESI To Start Feed-A-Child Initiative Soon
The Empowerment Support
Initiative (ESI), the pet project of the wife of Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi, would soon commence the “Feed A Child Initiative”, in nursery schools across the state.
Dame Amaechi disclosed this during a one-day Maggi Women’s Forum organised by ESI in collaboration with Nestle Plc and Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs on Monday at Eneka in Ikwerre local government area.
She explained that the ESI has taken the initiative in order to underscore the importance of good nutrition in school children, especially those at the kindergarten stage to enhance proper child development.
Dame Amaechi stated that research has shown that children who lack proper nutrition have retarded growth and are deficient in learning, hence she stressed that when the programme comes on stream, many children would be encouraged to go to school.
The Governor’s wife disclosed that about five consultant cooks would be engaged in each of the ESI Nursery Schools, as the pilot scheme would kick-off in five local government areas of Okrika, Gokana, Tai, Bonny and Obio/Akpor.
She further stated that in order to spread the scheme, plans have been concluded to establish ESI Nursery Schools in all the wards of the state adding, “so far, we have 16 of them in nine local government areas with 130 pupils of 3-6 years of age.” The ESI boss remarked that, “the essence of ESI is to lay a good foundation for our children in making them identify their talent, so that illiteracy would be wiped out”.
She therefore called on the womenfolk to always learn good home keeping and catering skills, which according to her would aid in better family health and stable society.
The Rivers State Governor’s wife, however, lauded Nestle Nigeria Plc, for organising the programme aimed at inculcating good family values in women and the country in general.
