Don Canvasses Manpower Dev In Education Sector
A lecturer in the Department of Education (Curriculum Studies) of the University of Port Harcourt, Choba, Mr. Jerome Anyawu, has stressed the need for the government to pay more attention to manpower development in the education sector.
Mr. Anyawu, who made the call in an interview with The Tide immediately after delivering a lecture titled, “National Philosophy of Education the Journey So Far” at a forum organized by Emohua post-graduate students forum recently said the measure would address the fallen standard of education in the country.
The University don also wants the government particularly policy makers in the Education sector to go back to the National Policy on education arguing that the present modified curriculum only succeeded in teaching and not how to teach.
He lauded Rivers State government for constructing modern primary and secondary school buildings in the state but said that the buildings should be matched with manpower development and equipment to achieve the desired goal.
According to him some schools in the state lacked qualified teachers especially science-oriented ones to teach in the schools while appealing that efforts should be made to recruit more teachers in the state.
On the Technical Colleges in the State, Mr Anyawu disclosed that the machines in the schools were not functional thereby making it difficult for teachers to teach students what they were expected to learn due to poor facilities.
He also picked hole in the appointment of some commissioners in the state advising that professionals should be used for professional assignments for the government desires improvement and stability in all sectors.
