Sustaining Nigeria’s Democracy
According to Oxford
Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, special new edition, democracy is defined as “a system of government in which all the people of a country can vote to elect their representatives”. Though, we have another popular definition of democracy known as: “Government of the people, by the people and for the people”.
It is interesting to note that democracy is all about the people’s interests and genuine participation. That is why the opinion of the people is paramount when true democracy is in place. And that is the beauty of democracy anywhere in the world, where it is practiced without coercion.
About a month from now, elections would begin, in virtually all the states of the Federation. The voter’s registration exercise, no matter how hard it was, has come and gone. The willing electorates have been enfranchised by getting their voter’s cards during the exercise that ended about a month ago.
The most important element in democracy is the people. If the people or the willing electorates are denied the right to vote for the candidates of their choice, no matter the party’s platform, it means democracy is defeated in Nigeria, Nigeria therefore cannot be called a democratic state.
If Nigerians must get real democracy that would make the people elect their representatives into positions of governance, selling of voter’s cards should not be heard this time around. And politicians should not induce the electorates with money to go against their conscience.
The Federal Government has spent billions of naira in preparing for the elections. Therefore, there is need for the huge expenses to result to successful elections in the country. The Federal government should not behave like a baby sitter who can not take some disciplinary measures against the child when the child misbehaves.
In Nigeria, nobody has gone to jail because of electoral offences. The government should be transparent despite the power of incumbency. In some countries of the world, the incumbency power has been neutralized because the people’s votes were counted and announced without any manipulation. Nigerian politicians must learn to accept genuine defeat that occurs as a result of the electorates’ votes.
Nigerians should be able to have peace in their environment during elections. The electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), should not compromise its status as the umpire of the elections. INEC should strive to desist from the past mistakes, where every hand was pointing to it as a biased umpire who was promoting electoral fraud during elections.
Nigerians want to see INEC that is impartial during elections. INEC should not collaborate with the people in government to undermine the genuine votes of the people that have made candidates outside government to win.
The political parties must, as a matter of fact, adhere to the rules and regulations guiding the process. Political parties should present candidates with impeccable character to carry their flags. The time when anybody anywhere would just emerge and pick the party’s ticket should be done away with this time around.
The political parties must have internal democracy that would make them practice genuine democracy in the country. The parties should, as a matter of urgent attention. Should compete to convince the electorates that their manifestoes for national development are the best. Nigeria must have a durable democracy that would stand the test of time in the world, not just in Africa.
The 2011 general elections is what will tell Nigerians where we are heading to as a nation. The political parties have presented their flagbearers to the Independent National Electoral Commission. The stage is now set. The candidates for presidential, governmentship, the Senatorial, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly for the elections are now on aggressive campaigns to convince the electorates to vote for them come the elections’ dates.
The campaigns should be devoid of character assassination. Thuggery and snatching of ballot boxes should not be condoned by Nigerians, who want democracy to survive in the country.
The April, 2011 general elections, though around the corner, must precede aggressive political education of the electorates before the elections proper. The elections will pose a major threat to the image of the nation in the comity of nations, if it is conducted in a barbaric manner without the principles and core values of democracy in place. Real democracy will kill ethnic or tribal sentiments that usually engulf the nation, when elections are at the corner.
If Nigerians support democracy to survive through the elections, meaningful development will not be far from us. Good road network; hospitals, sound education, energy or electricity and agriculture are products of real democracy. Real democracy will curb corruption that is embarrassing the nation.
One man, one vote would only come to pass when Nigerians support democracy to survive. Let Nigerians come out and vote to enhance democracy. Remember the elections will reveal the future to all Nigerians and non-Nigerians. Vote wisely.
