TIMA-RIV Makes Case For Marshalls Over Harassment
The Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority (TIMA-RIV) says it will no longer tolerate the incessant harassment, brutality and assault of its road Marshalls by uniformed men and the general public in Port Harcourt.
The Comptroller-General, Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority, Nelson Jaja, stated this during a press briefing in his office recently in Port Harcourt.
According to him, “TIMA-RIV can no longer condone the issue where our men are being harassed and assaulted by security agents when they are lawfully discharging their duties, especially, soldiers, police and other security officers.
They some times fight our people shoot and injure our Marshalls. That will no longer be tolerated.
We used the whole of last year to build a good relationship with the various security agencies, we are still in the process of maintaining a good relationship with them, but we will no longer allow them to brutalise our men when they are discharging their duties, he noted.
The TIMA-RIV boss, further appealed to various security agencies to understand that TIMA-RIV Marshalls are legitimate functionaries of the state government covered by the law and not just one of this make shift people on the road, saying that they will continue to dialogue with the respective security agencies in this regard.
He pointed out that there is no way one can stop a policemen on duty, the law grants them waiver and we are only mandated to assist them, but stress that the situation where one company escort will flout the traffic rules, will not be accepted.
