Jonathan Harps On Human Dev For Vision 20:2020
President Goodluck Jonathan has said that quality human development was a major force to propel the nation to be among the best 20 economies in the world by 2020.
The President made the remark while inaugurating a 30-member Presidential Task Force on Education last at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said the team was charged with the primary assignment of restoring the lost glory and high standard of education in the country.
Jonathan described education as the heart of a nation’s national development, reiterating the federal government’s resolve to pay special attention to the sector.
He said the inauguration of the team was sequel to the Education Stakeholder Summit convened by government in October 2010 to identify the challenges in the sector.
Jonathan challenged members of the team to come up with policies and recommendations that would refocus the sector.
He said the team’s terms of reference were to refocus and restructure existing policies at all levels of education, especially the concept and implementation of the 6-3-3-4 system, and propose a sustainable funding arrangement and transparent management of resources.
The committee is also to examine all laws militating against the delivery of qualitative education as well as the ethical issues and steps necessary to restore ethics and values at all levels.
Others are to develop programmes and projects that would attract talented and brilliant persons to the teaching profession, retain and motivate them as well as propose measures for the improvement of teaching and learning environment.
Our correspondent reports that Prof. B. I. Obayan is the chairman of the team, while members include commissioners of education from eight states, heads of federal education and examinations agencies and bodies.
Obanyan thanked the president for nominating them and assured him that the team would handle the assignment with commitment.
