Sharks FC Battles For Honours In WAFU Cup
Sharks of Port Harcourt faces an uphill task in putting in its players to full fitness as they compete for the final games of the WAFU cup this weekend.
The team struggled to a 1-0 win against Bukola Babes last weekend, and it was clear at the end of day that the players were match-rusty, after only training twice last week in protest over unpaid salaries.
But Coach Imama Amapakabor is confident the team would get to business this weekend in Lome as they seek to get a major title after so many years. Amapakabor, who spoke in a programme monitored in Port Harcourt said the team and its sponsor have learnt from the impasse that led to the players’ strike and prayed that such incidence be avoided in the future.
Meanwhile, the Sharks contingent departed for Lome on Wednesday enroute Lagos.
A team official said the players were in high spirits and have expressed their determination to give Rivers people more reasons to smile this Christmas.
The team would battle AC Semassi of Togo, Horoya of Guinea and Casa Sport of Senegal for the crown.
To advance to this stage, Sharks beat ASPAC FC 4-1 aggregate at the second round and thrashed Stella FC of Abidjan 6-0 aggregate at the third round.
The Coach John Obuh tutored side have been in hot form since the competition started, netting close to 18 goals so far.
In the Nigeria Premier League, the team had also not had it so bad, placing seventh on the log after scooping 12points from 7 matches.
