RSUST Strike: Students Seek Govt, ASUU Truce
Students of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology have called on the state government to step-up action towards meeting the demands of their teachers.
The President of the students union, Mr Chris Wonu, made the appeal when he led other members to visit the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Mr Magnus Abe, last Saturday in Port Harcourt.
Wonu said that the strike embarked by the academic staff of the university had affected their studies and participation in the NYSC scheme.
He called for the quick resolution of the problems by the state government.
Responding, Abe commended the students for their thoughtfulness in seeking for a solution over the lingering face-off between the state government and the teachers.
He said it was unpatriotic for them to embark on the strike after Governor Chibuike Amaechi had met with them and pleaded with them not to.
Abe said the present administration placed high premium on workers welfare and was the first in the country to implement the enhanced salary package for its workers.
The government, according to him, has always shown good faith on issues of education, health and other people-oriented progammes, and wondered why ASUU in the state unversity could claim that Amaechi was sabotaging their welfare.
He challenged the lecturers to demonstrate genuine concern in the educational prospects of the youths by choosing the path of honour and call off the strike.
Abe also called on the students to shun acts capable of impairing their roles as partners in building a virile society.
