Pharmaceutical Society Seeks Standards In Drug Administration
Determined to check the illegal sales and administration of drugs in Nigeria, the pharmaceutical society of Nigeria, has called for adherence to standards in drug administration in the country.
The chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the society, Miss Elizabeth Odili, during a courtesy call on the Administrator, Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority, Mrs. Aleruchi Cookey Gam in her office in Port Harcourt recently.
Mrs Odili said the relevant laws and regulations on drugs in Nigeria forbade the sales of drugs in unapproved and restricted areas.
She emphasised that drug administration in Nigeria was subject to regulation and supervision by professional pharmacists to avoid the influx of quacks in the process of drug administration.
She cautioned against the proliferation of patent medicare stores in the new Port Harcourt city as a prelude to sanitising the distribution of drugs in other parts of the city, and assured the government of the preparedness of the society to meet the drug needs of the people.
Drawing from the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria (PCN) Act, 1992, she said the law kicked against the location of pharamaceutical premises in motor parks and other congested business environment.
She also appealed for the allocation of 400 plots of land in the new city for the building of a beffiting secretariat and other affiliated projects.
In her remark, the Administrator, Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority, Mrs Aleruchi Cookey Gam, thanked the society for the visit, and their concern over the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority project. She said the authority was committed to checking all forms of violations in the new city, stressing that there will be strict commitment to regulations in the allocation of land. She also promised that the request for land for the building of their secretariat will be given due consideration.
