Ogoni Chief Tasks Jonathan On Power, Infrastucture
President Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to pursue the delivery of power and infrastructure with renewed vigor and vitality, and ensure the realization of these lofty goals before the 2011 general elections.
Speaking in an interview with The Tide On Sunday in Abuja ,an Abuja – based Ogoni Chief who is also an opinion- leader and elderstatesman, Gbenetonbe Barineka Thompson said President Jonathan will endear himself eternally to Nigerians if he delivers power and infrastructure to Nigerians, including those in the rural communities.
Gbenetonbe Thompson said the president should remain focused, refuse to be distracted and be determined in the implementation of his policy on power, and infrastructural development, as well as electoral reforms.
“We still have problem of electricity, infrastructure, the electoral system and all of that. When power and infrastructures are delivered to the people, all other areas of our development will begin to manifest. No doubt, infrastructure has been improved upon, but a lot still needs to be done,”he said.
Noting that Nigeria is a big country; Chief Thompson, who is a former Internal Auditor of Rivers State Community, Abuja (RVCOM) said all the areas yawning for attention and development cannot be tackled within the short period between now and the 2011 elections, so President Jonathan should concentrate on power and infrastructural development.
The Ogoni Chief expressed delight and thanks to God for the president’s assurance that votes will count at the next general elections, adding, “that, we believe, will see the light of day and the progress he has made so far will stabilize the polity”.
Thompson appealed to Nigerians to support the Jonathan Presidency in the onerous task that lies ahead while commending him for the in – road he has made in the agriculture sector. He also noted that the nation has not experienced food scarcity since Jontahan took over as President.
