‘Only 20,000 Nigerians Involved In Science Research’
Nigeria has an estimated 20,000 persons involved in science research as against one million each for United States of America (USA) and Japan.
Professor Fidelix Opara revealed this to The Tide in an interview shortly after the 26th Inaugural lecture on the “Development of Magreto-Hydrodynamics and Plasma Generators: Energy of the future in Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt.
He stated that although no detailed statistics of numbers of those engaged in scientific research in Nigeria are available, a background Paper he submitted to the first quarterly meeting of the Science and Technology Student Association (STEESA) in Port Harcourt put the figure at about 20,000 for the 36 states of Nigeria and the federal capital Territory.
According to him, this is against the estimated one million scientific researchers in USA and Japan.
“An analysis of these and Similar figure, he said, reveals that science and Technology research in Nigeria has less than one tenth the manpower and less than 100 the scientific Creativity and research publication compared to international norms.
Setting an example with Pakestan and USA, he stated that in 1994, Pakistan had 29 unuersities with about 100 Prefessors of physics and a total of 242 physics Ph.D teachers and researchers with Ph.D in all its universities.
“The corresponding numbers for Imperial College of Science, Technology in USA are 150 Professors, 550 researchers.
Conversely, in Nigeria with the Population of about 120 million the country has only 30 percent of what Pakistan has.
“In the Department of Physics of the RSUST, Port Harcourt we have only one Professor, two associate Professors and three adjunct Professors and less than 10 physics Ph.D teachers and researchers.
“The situation is not much better in most Universities in Nigeria,” he said.
He called on government at all levels and other stakeholders to invest in Education and Research, Particularly.
