May 27: A Toast But …
Tomorrow May 27, 2010, I would love to see Rivers people great one another with the following words: “Congratulations on the 43rd Anniversary of the state and on the 45th birth day of our indefatigable governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. May the love, peace, blessings and protection of God Almighty continue to abide with the government and good people of Rivers State. And may God preserve our governor and strengthen in him the spirit of committed and selfless service to the state”
Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967 and Governor Amaechi was born on May 27, 1965. By the tradition and culture of many African societies, Governor Amaechi and Rivers State belong to the same age grade. And wisdom of the ancients has it that whosever and whatsoever is born or done at the same time has similar qualities.
So you see why the Rivers spirit is burning in Governor Amaechi. The typical Rivers man (including woman) is full of life. He jumps into the maintstream of life with courage, joy, and happiness. Even when he is stretched like a rubber band he refuses to break. He is resilient and bold.
He is flamboyant and wears a cloak of self-importance, making him stand out of the crowd even among other Nigerians across the world.
From sports to movies, entertainment, politics, business, education, professional occupations, public service, and natural resources, Rivers state is a great land. Rivers State is a critical factor in Nigeria’s match towards industrial development. Those who believe that Nigeria can rank among the global top 20 economies by 2020 do so based on Rivers State’s crude oil and gas gifts from God. As the industrial nerve centre of the country, Rivers State has become a promised land for job seekers and others who are in search of economic survival.
So when a Rivers man walks tall with a swagger in his gait he should not be judged or condemned. In the same vein, when Governor Amaechi exudes the indomitable spirit of the Rivers man with some tinge of arrogance and brashness, he should not also be judged or condemned.
Tomorrow, three celebrations will be going on simultaneously in the state: the state’s 43rd Anniversary, Governor Amaechi 5th birthday, and Children’s Day celebrations.
This is a rare happenstance in the history of any state not only in Nigeria but also in other countries of the world.
Therefore, if by tomorrow stores and corporate organizations in the state hold their businesses to join in the celebrations across the state nobody should castigate them. If by tomorrow public servants in the state take it easy and treat themselves to good wine and the likes in the spirit of the celebrations no body should issue them any queries. And better still, if the state government declares tomorrow a public holiday, the celebrations would become most joyful.
Rivers people may not be celebrating tomorrow because their economic condition has significantly changed. No. They may be celebrating because their expectations for a positive change are beginning to rise.
When the state was created, it had 647 primary schools and 25 secondary schools. And there were no such tertiary institutions as university, college of education, and polytechnic in the state. And shortly after the creation of the state, it was estimated that about 40 per cent of Rivers people were either engaged as petty farmers, petty traders, and petty craftsmen. About 20 per cent were wage earners, and about 40 per cent were dependent people.
Even with its natural endowment, the process of transformation has been painful for Rivers people. Some increase has been recorded in the number of primary and secondary schools and some tertiary institutions including Universities and a polytechnic have been established in the state but the high level of poverty, unemployment, and inequality amongst the people has not declined. And the poor socio-economic status of the state which prides itself as the treasure base of the nation is lamentable.
Apparently this has been the challenge before Governor Amaechi since he took over the mantle of leadership of the state on October 26, 2007. Fired by the Rivers spirit and, perhaps, the mystic of common birthday with the state, Governor Amaechi has confronted these socio-economic challenges head on.
He has visibly made great strides in the areas of urban redesigning, health and educational facility provision, rural electrification, security, and road construction.
With his administration’s scholarship scheme, Rivers students in Britain, Scotland, Germany, USA, Rusia, Ukraine, Malasia, and other parts of the world are facing their studies with relaxed minds. The recognition of Rivers State as the best performing state in the education sector within the South-South geo-political zone by the federal government speaks for itself.
Besides, Governor Amaechi’s novel dream of Greater Port Harcourt project has taken form with the passing of its bill by the Rivers State House of Assembly and the release of funds for the commencement of the project.
The task before Governor Amaechi’s administration in the days ahead should be to deal more decisively with the undeserved poverty the people have suffered over the years and provide full employment, social security for the aged, general rural pipe-born water, and feeder roads to benefit the poor.
Tomorrow, Rivers people shall drink a toast to the greatness of the state and its children and to the good health, wisdom and strength of their governor, Rt. Hon. Amaechi, but may the necessary and sufficient economic and environmental condition and consciousness suitably oriented to the promotion of participatory development be created for the state and its people.
