UNEP Hosts Community Consultation Committee
As part of efforts by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in its Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland Project, the organization recently established and hosted the inaugural meeting of the Community Consultation Committee (CCC), at the project office in Port Harcourt.
The initiative forms part of UNEP’s broader communications and outreach strategy, which focuses on transparency of information and building strong relationships with local communities, as well as regional and national stakeholders.
Speaking with The Tide shortly after the inauguration, UNEP Communications Adviser, Ogoniland Project, Jimmy Okoroh, said the committee was established to promote continuous communication and dialogue between key regional and stakeholders, and dissemminate information on a monthly basis.
He stated that the CCC will provide a forum for open discussion and exchange of ideas .
Other key objection, according to him, include the provision of strategic advice on UNEP’s activities related to the engagement of communities and providing recommendations to the presidential implementation Committee (PIC) of UNEP’s environmental assessment project.
The inauguration was attended by high profile stakeholders, including, Prof. Roseline Konya, (former Commissioner for Environment, Rivers State) Engr. Enyi of the National Oil Spill Detection Agency, Prof Philip Shekwolo (SPDC), and Dr. Iyenemi Kakulu of the Rivers State University and Science and technology, Port Harcourt.
Membership of the committee by its terms of reference include representatives of women and youths, including the chairman of the four Ogoni local government areas.
