Association Decries Non-Compliance To Procurement Law
The President, Federation of African Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, Professor Anthony Emeribe has said that the non application of the procurement law recently passed by the National Assembly in most parts of the country has turned public institutions into dumping ground for unused and absolute equipment.
Professor Emeribe, who is also a lecturer at the University of Calabar, Cross Rivers State, gave this indication in his paper entitled, “Breaking beyond Financial mediocrity in the practice of medical laboratory sciences” at a dinner / award night organised by the Rivers State Chapter of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, recently in Port Harcourt.
He also commented the over centralisation of procurement process in the public sector.
The university Don also warned against the unnecessary competition among medical laboratory practitioners in the country, stressing that this situation has tended to reduce their prestige in the society.
The chairman of the occasion, Sir Chief Nelson Wali thanked the association for its annual biomedical week, stressing that the various activities lined up for the week has brought to the fore, their importance in the overall socio-economic development of the country.
He stressed the need for the situation to be sustained. In his welcome address, the state chairman of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Dr Chris Mbata, described the profession of medical laboratory science as the key to good health.
Dr Mbata said that the association has through its various activities brought under control the activities of quacks in Rivers State and stressed the need for the full integration of medical laboratory scientists into the policy making bodies of government.
Among the awardees are; Dr (Mrs) Stella I. Toby permanent secretary, free medical care programme, Ministry of Health, Rivers State, Mrs C.D. Blankson, Chief Medical Laboratory Scientists, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, (UPTH) Port Harcourt, Hon Ike Chinwo, member, representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency and Hon Golden Ben Chioma of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The rest are: Prince Timothy Nsirim, Chairman, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area and Sir (Chief) Nelson Wali.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
