SMEDAN To Sponsor 16 Nigerians To US
The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) is to host a boot-camp in Abuja where 16 qualified Nigerians aged between 22 and 35 years are to be selected to participate in a four-week training in Miami, Florida, in July.
SMEDAN is collaborating with the U.S. Department, Barry University and other stakeholders in the project to strengthen entrepreneurship development in Nigeria and other African countries, according to a statement from the Head, Corporate Affairs of SMEDAN, Mr Levi Anyikwa.
In the statement on Tuesday in Abuja, Anyikwa stated that the Africa Diaspora Partnership for Empowerment and Development [ADPED] was a major stakeholder in the collaboration.
“It seeks to provide entrepreneurship and business development training to young Nigerian businessmen and entrepreneurs in an effort to stimulate job creation and economic activities in Nigeria and Africa.
“The project is also expected to enhance the institutional capacity of collaborating Nigerian partners to incorporate key elements of the free market system.
“It also includes entrepreneurial spirit, transparency and accountability in the management of public and private sectors and to integrate these elements in the national educational system,’’ he said.
Anyikwa explained that under the collaboration, Barry University professors would liaise with their counterparts in the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, to strengthen their entrepreneurship curriculum.
The Barry University-ADPED partnership is one of 11 projects being funded in Africa by the State Department under the Young Entrepreneur Programme (YEP).
It seeks which to promote entrepreneurial thinking, job creation, and business planning and management skills for emerging young professionals worldwide.
The project has a budget of N70 million, according to the statement and funded by the U.S. State Department under the Fulbright-Hays Act.
During the programme in the U.S., participants will visit local businesses and small ventures, as well as organisations that support entrepreneurs such as banks and other financial institutions, venture capitalists, governmental and non-governmental agencies that track and support economic and entrepreneurial activity.
Ten professionals, including ADPED leaders and Barry University faculty members, are also expected in Nigeria for one week to assist colleagues at their partner institutions to develop their own entrepreneurship training programme, according to the statement.
