Plans are underway by the Rivers State Government to host the National Health Demographic Conference by next year.
The plan was made public by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker, who spoke through the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics in the Ministry, Dr Idoniboye Obu at the launch of the final report of the 2008, Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) by the National Population Commission (NPC) in Port Harcourt, Wednesday.
Dr Parker said the basis of hosting the conference is to further deliberate on the NDHS report, which he described as a vital planning document.
The Rivers State Health Commissioner lauded the NPC for conducting the NDHS, saying the exercise was a positive attempt at providing useful health planning information and urged them not to be deterred by the poor public reaction.
He stated that the present administration is poised to lift the health sector through the recent infrastructure provision, adding that the data provided by the NDHS would provide useful information in the maning and management of health facilities.
Earlier in his remarks, chairman of NPC Chief Samila Danko Makama represented by the Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State, Chief Moses Ofori said the NDHS report was compiled between 2007 and October 2008.
He said the report has already been adopted by the body’s council of commissioners and presented to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
Consequently, because of the public yearning to have the report, he said the NPC has decided to publicise the document.
The objective of the report he stated are to collect information on sexual practices of women and men, assess the nutritional status of children under age five and women 15-49 years of age.
The document also covers report on maternal mortality, children mortality and information on knowledge and attitude of women and men about HIV/AIDS treatment of sexually transmitted infections and behaviour regarding condom use.
The NPC chief commended the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for funding the survey, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for funding the household listing-exercise and additional field support.
He further expressed the hope that the report would be useful in mapping out strategies for attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
