RSG To Sanction Defaulters Of Schools Closing
The authorities in the Rivers State Ministry of Education have issued a strong warning to principals and head Teachers of both public and private schools to adhere strictly to the closing date of this academic session billed for 18th of December.
In a statement issued and made available to The Tide on the matter, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Richard Ofuru said defaulters of this date would face unpleasant consequences, adding that the CARNIRIV festival doesn’t in any way affect activities in schools.
It is expected that teachers and pupils would participate in the CARNIRN festival expected to take off on the 12th of December.
Reacting to the statement in a telephone chat with The Tide, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Mrs. Edna Opara declared that, “it is okay. We are sorting ourselves out.”
Her reaction came at the backdrop that private schools are far ahead of their public schools counterparts following the strike by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in public schools a month ago.
It would be recalled that while the strike was on, private schools were still in session.
Meanwhile, the state commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Nemi has issued queries to the head teacher and other staff of Community Primary School Ogbidi in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area for failing to report to duty.
Dame Nemi who assured that disciplinary measures would be taken on the affected teachers frowned at the situation where teachers fail to report to duty.
The commissioner had paid an unscheduled visit to schools in Omoku and Elele with the intention of finding out how rural schools were faring.
She expressed displeasure on the lax attitude of teachers to duty and therefore called on Heads and staff of public primary schools in the state to live up to their responsibility or face disciplinary measures.
Dame Nemi maintained that teachers who fail to report to duty would equally face sack in line with the governor’s directive.
Dame Nemi used the opportunity to visit some of the projects sites of the ongoing construction of model primary schools in the areas, where she observed that some contractors were not on site and others working at a slow pace.
