COMPOL Promises Better Relationship With Rivers Journalists
The Rivers State Police Command has admitted its fault in the face-off between it and the Rivers State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and promised to make amend in future.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bala Hassan who stated this in an interview with The Tide on Monday at the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa, revealed that he personally went to meet the executive of the Nigeria Union of journalists, Rivers State Chapter to apologise on the matter.
According to him, “we have seen where we went wrong and have agreed to make amend. I am happy that the matter has been resolved. I can not fight the press. “you are aware that the pen is mightier than the sword.”
He however described the incident between the Police and the Press as unfortunate and promised that such incident will never happen again within his tenure as commissioner of Police in Rivers State.
Hassan pleaded that the command is ever ready to maintain a good relationship with all journalists and other professional bodies, explaining that he wants the relationship between the Police and the Press to be stronger, better and solid throughout his tenure as the commissioner of Police.
The Commissioner who was recently given an award by Africa Security Watchword the “distinguished best commissioner of Police in Nigeria”, expressed gratitude to all who have contributed to bringing him to limelight.
He said those who honoured him, looked at his record and input as commissioner of Police, in Edo, and his contribution as Commissioner of Police Mobile as well as his role in ensuring and bringing peace and stability in Rivers State.
“All these made them to single me out for the honour which I received in Ghana.”
He however said the award will not deter him from performing his duty and re-assured that before he leaves Rivers State, he will make the state safest in Nigeria and commended the wonderful support from the Rivers State government.
