NEPAD Plans Child Rights Bill
The Special Adviser to the Rivers State Governor on New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD), Dr Tex Wariboko, has assured the leadership of the Children Parliament that the agency would promote the passage of the Child Rights Bills into law in the state.
Dr Wariboko who gave the assurance when members of the Children Parliament paid a courtesy visit to his office on Thursday said NEPAD as an agency is against any form of discrimination against children.
He said since children are the future of the state and the country, he pledged support that the agency would carryout activities that would ensure they attain their full potentials in life.
The Rivers NEPAD boss while identifying the role of children in development of any country, declared that children should be given the right to explore and achieve their potentials.
He promised that the agency would prevail on the State Government to provide members of the children parliament scholarships in order to acquire sound education.
Since the parliament lack chambers and offices, he assured the young legislators that the agency would provide its offices for the use by the children.
In her remarks, Speaker of the Children Parliament, Rt. Hon. Ataise Clifford advocated for the quick passage of the Childs Rights Act.
She lamented that since the bill was introduced three years ago by the Ministry of Social Welfare it has suffered setbacks and lack of consideration by the assembly.
She listed problems faced by the children parliament in the state as including lack of office space, chambers and inability of the young parliamentarians to get scholarships in order to aid their education.
