Ogun: Comptroller Gives Smugglers Red Card
Smugglers operating at the Idiroko/Abeokuta border last week were given red card to clear out of the area or risk aggressive action of government including arrest and prosecution.
The Customs Area Comptroller in Ogun State Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Emmanuel Dede Kane said his officers and men have been fully moblised to deal ruthlessly with smugglers if they are not ready to shun their illicit trade.
Reviewing his score card in his first 100 days in the command, Emmanuel Kane said he is prepared to dismiss any officer who will compromise the fight of making Idiroko/Abeokuta border unsafe for smuggling activities.
The Customs Area Comptroller also reminded businessmen and women patronising the border post to be wary of government ban on poultry and cassava products to avoid the long arm of the law. He said importers and exporters using the border have nothing to fear if they confine their operations within the ambit of the law.
He said his dream was to make Ogun State border a trade friendly area where legal business is encouraged while there is no hiding place for operators of illicit business through the border in the state.
Sound tough, the Customs Area Comptroller said his command was combatant ready to block illegal bush paths which smugglers use in bringing in their goods into the country.
Kane was happy that the unrelented efforts of his command have yielded positive results as smugglers are reportedly shifting ground.
Meanwhile, the command has made a total of 20 seizures of goods valued N135,674,100 and seven person arrested in connection with the crime.
But the governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel says the construction of Ogun-Guangdong free trade zone when completed will boost the economy of the state.
Governor Daniel who spoke through his economic adviser, Mrs Yosolaoluwa Akinbi when he inspected the construction site at Igbesa in company of Comptroller Kane said the development of the free Trade Zone would also go a long way in promoting tourism in the state.
Comptroller, in his assessment of the Free Trade Zone, said that Nigeria has abundant tourism potentials if properly harnessed would be the catalyst for the country’s economic greatness.
